Our favorite bakeries in Budapest

In Budapest, there are many bakeries all over the city, each of which presents a unique range of traditional and modern baked goods. From fresh pastries to artisan breads, these bakeries are the perfect place to start the day with a delicious bite and a good coffee. We’ve explored many places over the years and found a few that have become our absolute favorites. Here is a list of our five best bakeries in Budapest, based on our own experience.

1. Artizán Budapest

In our eyes, the first place was clearly won by the wonderful team of Artizán. This bakery stands out for its commitment to using fresh, local ingredients and baking everything in-house without additives. Whether you’re in the mood for breakfast sandwiches, baguettes or monthly special breads, you can find everything at Artizán, and you can also visit them for a lunch menu on weekdays. Although the prices are slightly higher, the quality is unmatched and clearly felt. Among their pastries, you can find both eternal classics and seasonal specialties, which makes it worth returning often.

2. Három Tarka Macska – Pozsonyi út

Három Tarka Macska on Pozsonyi Street quickly became a favorite of the locals, ourselves included. The location is perfect for a relaxed weekend where you can enjoy quality pastries in the shade of the trees. Baked goods, including baguettes, croissants and various breads, also sell out quickly. The bakery, which also functions as a breakfast place, also offers sandwiches and egg dishes in the morning. It is outstanding among the artisanal bakeries in Budapest, although the prices are a bit higher here as well, but this is typical of most bakeries, as is the fact that you don’t get mass-produced baked goods for your money. We highly recommend their pistachio raspberry croissant here, which is simply divine. Paired with a delicious coffee, you have the perfect breakfast recipe.

3. Arán Pékség – Wesselényi utca

Arán Pékség has a special charm, partly due to its Irish roots. The owner couple learned the baking trade in Ireland and brought back an Irish “mother yeast” named Paddy. Their sourdough breads and baguettes are of high quality, and the counter is full of various sweet and savory pastries and sandwiches. Due to the combination of traditional Irish techniques and Hungarian flavors, Arán Pékség can claim the prestigious third place.

4. Läget

Läget is an artisanal bakery in downtown Budapest that draws inspiration from Scandinavian recipes. Whether you’re looking for fresh baked goods for breakfast or lunch, Läget offers a delightful selection of sourdough breads, cakes and sandwiches. Their special coffee and cold-pressed juices are also worth trying. Läget’s menu is exciting and varied, in addition to Scandinavian baked goods, you can also find traditional Hungarian favorites such as cottage cheese batyu and various types of bread.

5. VAJ – Rákóczi

VAJ is a Budapest bakery, cafe and breakfast place in one, in a spacious and inviting business premises. BUTTER, as a choice of name, is not unfounded, since the soul of almost every product here is butter, which is obtained mainly from Normandy and the Netherlands. They prioritize high-quality ingredients and create a variety of baked goods that are both delicious and comforting. Whether you’re visiting for a croissant with butter or a hearty sandwich, VAJ is a great place to pamper yourself, but the high quality is also reflected in their prices.

These are our favorite bakeries in Budapest, each of them offers something unique and delightful, with which we can surely satisfy our desire for quality baked goods. We wish you a pleasant discovery in the flood of Budapest bakeries!
